Abstract
Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance frequency and the importance of instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) in Korean adults and identify factors influencing them.

Methods : Five hundred and eighty-eight adults aged from those in their 20s to those in their 70s who lived in the community were selected as subjects of the study and IADLs in which they participated were investigated. The questionnaire consisted of 12 general characteristics and the frequency and importance of 12 IADLs based on the 3rd edition of Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) and the Likert 5 point scale was employed. We investigated the correlation between the frequency and importance of IADLs and the factors related to the frequency and importance of IADLs in Korean adults.

Results : Among the 12 IADLs, the highest frequency recorded for Korean adults was meal preparation and clean up (4.12 ¡¾ 1.08). The importance of IADLs was highest in relation to health care and maintenance (4.04 ¡¾ 0.89). There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the performance frequency and importance of IADLs (p<0.05) except for religious and spiritual activities and expression. Among the general characteristics of Korean adults, factors related to the frequency of IADLs were occupation, age, education level, drugs, and drinking, and factors related to importance were age, marital status, education level, gender, occupation, address, monthly average income and so on (p<.05). There was a correlation between what they regarded as important in the IADLs and the use frequency. The use frequency and importance of the IADLs showed a significant difference according to the characteristics of individuals.

Conclusion : It is very important to reflect factors related to the individual s environment and background in
the evaluation of the IADL and intervention plans in occupational therapy.
